Eighth Grade is a year of academic excellence, spiritual growth, and preparation for high school. As the culmination of the elementary school experience, students are challenged to think critically, communicate effectively, and become confident, independent learners rooted in faith. Aligned with the New York State Learning Standards and guided by Catholic values, the curriculum prepares students for success in advanced coursework while fostering leadership, service, and lifelong learning.
Using the Word of Life religion curriculum, students journey through the history of the Church by studying the lives of the saints who courageously proclaimed the Gospel throughout every age. Through Sacred Scripture, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Lectio Divina, and the writings of saints and Doctors of the Church, students deepen their understanding of Catholic doctrine while discovering their own call to holiness, missionary discipleship, and faithful leadership within the Church and the world.
Eighth Grade English Language Arts prepares students for the academic expectations of high school through rigorous reading, writing, speaking, and research experiences. Students analyze classic and contemporary literature, informational texts, and persuasive writing while strengthening critical thinking, textual analysis, and evidence-based communication. Through research projects, collaborative discussions, presentations, and analytical writing, students develop the confidence and skills necessary for advanced academic success.
Eighth Grade Mathematics develops strong algebraic reasoning, problem-solving, and mathematical communication. Students investigate the real number system, linear equations, functions, systems of equations, geometry, transformations, statistics, and mathematical modeling through inquiry-based learning and real-world applications. Students strengthen their analytical thinking while building the foundation necessary for success in Algebra I and future STEM coursework.
Eighth Grade offers two pathways that provide students with a rigorous and engaging study of the life sciences while preparing them for future success in high school science.
Students enrolled in Regents Life Science (Biology) participate in an accelerated, high school-level course aligned with the New York State Regents Learning Standards. Through extensive laboratory investigations and scientific inquiry, students study the chemistry of life, cellular biology, genetics, molecular biology, evolution, heredity, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and the interconnected systems that sustain life. Emphasis is placed on scientific reasoning, data analysis, laboratory techniques, and evidence-based problem solving while preparing students to successfully complete the New York State Regents Examination in Life Science (Biology). Students who successfully complete the course and Regents Examination earn high school science credit.
Students enrolled in Non-Regents Life Science build a strong foundation in biology by exploring living organisms, ecosystems, heredity, human body systems, biodiversity, environmental science, and the interactions that sustain life on Earth. Through laboratory activities, scientific investigations, collaborative projects, and inquiry-based learning, students strengthen observation, experimentation, scientific communication, and critical thinking skills while developing an appreciation for the natural world.
Across both pathways, students engage in meaningful laboratory experiences that emphasize scientific inquiry, microscopy, data collection, analysis, and evidence-based reasoning. These experiences foster curiosity, collaboration, and the confidence to apply scientific knowledge to real-world challenges.
Eighth Grade Social Studies explores the development of the United States from Reconstruction through the twenty-first century. Students investigate industrialization, immigration, imperialism, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, foreign policy, demographic changes, and contemporary America. Through historical inquiry, primary source analysis, research, and discussion, students develop a deeper understanding of American history while strengthening civic responsibility and critical thinking.
As the leaders of the school community, Eighth Grade students embrace increased responsibility through academic excellence, service, and leadership opportunities. Students strengthen executive functioning, organization, collaboration, and self-advocacy while preparing for the transition to high school. Graduation activities, high school preparation, and leadership experiences help students grow as confident, compassionate young adults ready to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
