Seventh Grade is a year of academic growth, leadership, and preparation for the transition into eighth grade and beyond. Students are challenged to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their learning to increasingly complex concepts while continuing to grow in faith and character. Rooted in Catholic values and aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, the Seventh Grade curriculum fosters intellectual curiosity, responsibility, and confidence as students prepare for advanced coursework and leadership opportunities.
Using the Word of Life religion curriculum, students deepen their understanding of Sacred Scripture, Church teaching, Catholic morality, prayer, and the Sacraments. Students strengthen their relationship with Christ through daily prayer, liturgical celebrations, service opportunities, and meaningful discussions that encourage them to live their faith both in and beyond the classroom.
Seventh Grade English Language Arts develops thoughtful readers, confident writers, and effective communicators. Students engage with a variety of literary and informational texts while analyzing themes, author's craft, point of view, and text structure. Through close reading, evidence-based discussions, and analytical writing, students learn to support their ideas with textual evidence and think critically about what they read. Writing instruction emphasizes argumentative, informative, and narrative compositions, while research projects strengthen students' ability to evaluate credible sources, develop thesis statements, and communicate ideas with precision. Collaborative discussions, presentations, and debates further build confidence in speaking and listening.
Seventh Grade Mathematics develops strong problem-solving and mathematical reasoning through the study of rational numbers, proportional relationships, percentages, algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, and geometry. Students investigate real-world applications while building fluency with operations involving rational numbers, proportional reasoning, linear expressions, equations, inequalities, and the area and circumference of circles. Technology and collaborative learning experiences reinforce conceptual understanding and prepare students for Algebra.
Seventh Grade Science provides students with an engaging, hands-on exploration of chemistry and physical science while strengthening scientific inquiry and laboratory skills. Students investigate the structure and properties of matter, energy, atomic structure, the Periodic Table, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, and carbon chemistry through laboratory investigations and collaborative experiments. Emphasis is placed on scientific reasoning, data analysis, metric measurement, and safe laboratory practices as students learn to apply scientific concepts to real-world situations and develop the habits of inquiry essential to scientific discovery.
Seventh Grade Social Studies takes students on a chronological journey through the development of the United States, from the earliest inhabitants of North America to the Civil War. Students examine the impact of geography, exploration, colonization, the American Revolution, the Constitution, westward expansion, reform movements, sectionalism, and the Civil War while exploring how these events shaped the nation's identity. Through primary and secondary source analysis, historical inquiry, debate, research, and evidence-based writing, students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for American history and civic responsibility.
As leaders within the middle school community, Seventh Grade students strengthen executive functioning skills by managing long-term projects, collaborating across disciplines, and taking greater ownership of their academic responsibilities. Students continue developing organization, time management, perseverance, self-advocacy, and leadership while preparing for the increased expectations of eighth grade and high school.
