Sixth Grade builds upon the independence developed in Fifth Grade while challenging students to think more critically, communicate more effectively, and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. As members of our Middle School community, students continue changing classes, managing lockers, and working with content-area teachers in a structured, supportive environment. Rooted in our Catholic faith and aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, Sixth Grade encourages students to grow academically, spiritually, and personally while preparing for the increased rigor of the upper middle school years.
Using the Word of Life religion curriculum, students deepen their understanding of Sacred Scripture, Catholic doctrine, morality, prayer, and the Sacraments. Students are encouraged to strengthen their personal relationship with Christ through daily prayer, participation in the liturgical life of the Church, faith discussions, and service to others.
Sixth Grade English Language Arts emphasizes close reading, critical thinking, analytical writing, and effective communication. Students analyze literary and informational texts, determine themes, make evidence-based inferences, evaluate arguments, and develop persuasive, informative, and narrative writing. Vocabulary development, grammar, public speaking, collaborative discussions, and research skills prepare students to become thoughtful readers, writers, and communicators.
Students develop deeper mathematical reasoning through the study of ratios and proportional relationships, expressions and equations, integers, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving. Instruction emphasizes conceptual understanding, mathematical precision, and applying mathematics to authentic, real-world situations while preparing students for accelerated middle school mathematics.
Sixth Grade science engages students in inquiry-based learning through hands-on investigations, laboratory experiences, and engineering design challenges. Students strengthen their understanding of life, Earth, and physical science concepts while developing scientific reasoning, data analysis, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
Students explore the history and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere, beginning with geographic literacy and early human civilizations before examining the great river valley civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. Throughout the year, students investigate how geography, culture, religion, government, and innovation shaped civilizations and continue to influence our world today. Historical thinking, primary source analysis, chronology, and evidence-based inquiry are emphasized throughout the course.
Sixth Grade students continue developing executive functioning skills by managing multiple classes, organizing coursework across subjects, utilizing lockers, planning long-term assignments, and communicating effectively with multiple teachers. As expectations increase, students build confidence, independence, accountability, and leadership while receiving guidance and support from faculty.

Our Sixth Grade program offers a challenging yet nurturing middle school experience where students are encouraged to pursue academic excellence while deepening their faith and character. Through rigorous coursework, meaningful relationships, and individualized support, students continue developing the confidence, organizational skills, and leadership qualities necessary for success throughout middle school and beyond.
