Visions for the Future
Values for a Lifetime
First Grade at St. Patrick School builds upon the strong foundation established in Kindergarten by fostering academic growth, spiritual development, and increasing independence. Students are encouraged to become confident readers, thoughtful writers, problem-solvers, and compassionate followers of Christ. Through engaging instruction, hands-on learning, and meaningful collaboration, our curriculum aligns with the New York State Learning Standards while nurturing curiosity, responsibility, and a lifelong love of learning.
Using the Word of Life religion program, students deepen their understanding of God's love through Scripture, prayer, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. They learn about the life of Jesus, the Sacraments, the liturgical year, virtues, and Christian discipleship while participating in daily prayer, school liturgies, and opportunities for service.
First graders continue developing foundational literacy skills through explicit phonics instruction, guided reading, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, grammar, handwriting, and writing workshops. Students learn to read with increasing fluency, identify story elements, compare literary and informational texts, ask and answer questions about what they read, and write complete sentences and organized paragraphs using correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Rich literature experiences encourage critical thinking and a love of reading.
Students strengthen number sense by developing fluency with addition and subtraction, understanding place value, solving word problems, measuring length, telling time, working with money, interpreting data, and exploring two- and three-dimensional shapes. Hands-on activities, manipulatives, and real-world problem-solving help students build mathematical reasoning and confidence.
Through inquiry-based investigations and STEM experiences, students explore life science, physical science, Earth science, and engineering concepts. They learn to ask questions, observe patterns, conduct simple investigations, collect data, and communicate their findings while developing critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills.
Students expand their understanding of families, communities, citizenship, geography, and American traditions. They learn about maps, historical figures, cultural diversity, and the responsibilities of being respectful and active members of both their classroom and the larger community.

Our First Grade classrooms provide a nurturing, faith-centered environment where students are challenged to grow academically while feeling known, valued, and supported.
