Visions for the Future
Values for a Lifetime
Second Grade is a year of growing confidence, independence, and curiosity. Students strengthen their academic skills while learning to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Rooted in our Catholic faith and aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, the curriculum encourages students to become compassionate learners who are prepared for continued success in the classroom and beyond.
Using the Word of Life religion program, students deepen their relationship with Christ through Scripture, prayer, the Sacraments, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Daily prayer, participation in school liturgies, and opportunities for service help students grow in faith, virtue, and Christian discipleship.
Second graders become increasingly confident readers and writers through a balanced literacy approach that includes reading, writing, phonics, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and language development. Students write complete sentences using proper capitalization and punctuation, compose stories with clear beginnings, middles, and ends, summarize and retell texts, develop narratives with problems and solutions, write friendly letters, and create personal narratives. Weekly spelling instruction reinforces phonics skills and vocabulary development, while whole-group and small-group reading instruction helps students build fluency, decode unfamiliar words, identify story elements, expand vocabulary, and locate important details within a text. Benchmark assessments are used throughout the year to monitor student growth and guide instruction.
Students build strong mathematical reasoning by developing fluency with addition and subtraction facts while solving two- and three-digit addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping. Instruction also includes place value, time, money, fractions, measurement, two- and three-dimensional shapes, skip counting, number patterns, and real-world problem-solving. Hands-on activities encourage students to explain their thinking and apply mathematical concepts with confidence.
Students explore the world through scientific inquiry by learning the scientific method and investigating the properties of matter, habitats, ecosystems, and the relationships between plants and animals. STEM experiences encourage observation, experimentation, collaboration, and critical thinking as students discover how science connects to everyday life.
Students develop an understanding of their role as active citizens by exploring communities, geography, government, and economics. Topics include urban, suburban, and rural communities, democracy, laws and rules, geography and natural resources, and basic economic systems. Through these studies, students learn how people work together to build strong communities and contribute to society.

These enrichment classes inspire creativity, cultural appreciation, physical wellness, innovation, and collaborative learning while complementing classroom instruction.
Second Grade encourages students to develop responsibility, perseverance, empathy, and respectful communication. Through cooperative learning, classroom discussions, and daily routines, students strengthen their independence, confidence, and ability to work thoughtfully with others.
Our Second Grade classrooms provide a welcoming, faith-filled environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, embrace challenges, and celebrate growth. Through meaningful partnerships with families and engaging learning experiences, students continue to develop the academic skills, character, and confidence needed for future success.
